Question: What is the purpose of providing candy to members at Virginia Beach city training events? If we are supposed to be careful about our health and sugar intake, wouldn't it be a better choice to offer nutritious snacks to boost our energy?
Answer by the Virginia Beach Learning & Development Office: The health and well-being of our employees and our citizens is important. There are 100s of smart choices one can fix and bring along to have a quick, healthy snack during working hours or throughout the day. We would hope that everyone continues to look for ways to live healthy lifestyles and/or find ways to make wise choices for themselves and their families. As an employee, HealthyRoads and the Wellness for Life programs provide great information and are full of resources that employees can access to learn more about choices and changes that they might consider for themselves.
However, specifically responding to the offerings of candies and beverages during citywide classes, this is provided as a courtesy to those who are using the classrooms. It is not intended to serve as a full snack or a meal, but rather a bite size refreshment that one can indulge in if one chooses. The beverages currently offered are water, tea and coffee. The small candies consist of both sugar-free and bite size chocolates. We would love to be able to afford additional choices and to offer a greater variety, but we simply do not have money to support anything greater. Donations and ideas are always welcome.
